Icaza Greg Davis & Mike Metz Camp Doo-Ron Knolly Ebba Duggan Fly & Healy Mark Harris and Crew Ted Holcomb and Crew Pugsley Sean Icaza: There is only a handful of Gillis legends on the Volleyball court. Sean is one of the top players to ever grace Gillis Beach. He's appeared in more finals without winning than he cares to remember, but he's gotten 2 "G" ratings. He's brought his skills, costumes and Gillis party attitude every year for a decade, and he sure is pretty.
Greg Davis and Mike Metz- Both are legends in every aspect of the Gillis. Great costumes year in and year out, great volleyball players and awesome camps and skits. Their whole crew is totally into the Gillis each and every year. Mike Metz lives in his costume from Friday night till dawn on Monday, and consistently makes it to the finals in full garb. These guys epitomize the spirit of the Gillis.
Camp Doo-Ron- No one ever wanted to play on the outside courts because no one watched. This crew never beefed at all. 10 years ago they started bringing their own HUGE party at the furthest reaches of the tournament. Now, everyone goes out that far because they know there's a party happening. All weekend you can smell the BBQ shrimp and fish tacos sizzlin' as well as breakfast burritos, and steak skewers cooked up by Mark Duron and Carl. Carl Hicks has been coming to the Gillis for 27 years and the Duron family for almost that long. Paul Duron is famous for his Disco dancing in your face. Rob is the ringleader who brought his parents every year to enjoy the festivities. Even Steve Duron shows up every decade or so. If you haven't been to this camp by the bathrooms, you have missed out. This is the true spirit of the Gillis. Knolly- Greg Knoll started coming to the Gillis when he was only 15. His creative costumes and skits have been (mostly) hits at Showtime every year. his camps reign supreme with last years live band topping it all. A deserved King in 1999 will be looking to make a splash for this years coronation. I hope he wears his hair. EBBA- Ed Stevenson has been coming to the Gillis since 1974. He tagged along with brother Stu till he came into his own when his brother disappeared in the late 80's. He buys his own court each year so that he can have 50 of his closest friends all on the same court (Club Ebba). He won the Hoffy twice and has never had a fight with his wife at the Gillis. A true Gillis legend. Duggan- Doug Duggan has been the complete Gillis package for over 2 decades now. From his perch overlooking The Crans, he has kept his volleyball skills honed as well as any 55 yr. old man can. No one has been able to maintain as high a level of play at his age while indulging in so many natural joys of the Gillis as Mr. Duggan. He has his own court (Mr. Duggans Neighborhood) and his own following. He brings it all each and every year. Fly and Healy- Fly lives in Chicago (he's the one that stole that Dodger hat at Wrigley) but has come every year for a decade to team up with Jim Healy, another Crans menace. Their creative and dry costumes and themes have been one of the most simple but effective efforts year in and year out. They deserve a warped high-five. Mark Harris and Crew- Over the past decade, Mark Harris and his cronies have crossed new heights to lead the way towards phenomenal camps, costumes and skits. Their most memorable is hard to pin down. Gillis Cavalcade of Clowns, Gillis Wrestling Federation, Hare Cressman's, Gillis Convalescents, Pirates of the Gillabean and Los Mariachis, to name a few. Mark has been a ringleader of this merry band for over a decade as well as Gillis King. He brings it all and we salute his whole crew. Ted Holcomb and Crew- A relatively new group with only a decade at the Gillis, they stepped up in a big way with their first huge effort at theme, costumes and camp: Jamaiican Bobsled. They then stole Showtime 2 years ago with their Rugrats skit. Their entry at the Gillis was just as successful with the Flying Elvis's teaming up with Spencer at a most memorable showtime. Their ER camp 3 years ago took Robby Stuetzel 3 days to erect and I still don't think it's been dismantled. Ted Holcomb is a King(94). Their efforts each year have been outstanding. Pugsley- Greg Pugsley has carried Davin, Read and Knolly to new highs (or lows) throughout the decade with some of the greatest skits and costumes ever to grace Gillis Beach. My Best Friends Wedding in '97 stole Showtime and threw Pugsley into history, wedding gown and all. His Boitano and Elvis skating skit with Davin almost stole it again the next year. If it weren't for a technical glitch last year, Pugsley would have stolen it again with the awesome (and ugly) Sonny and Cher. If he brings another gown this year, somebody has to bring hot wax for that back hair. Welcome to the Hall of Fame.
